The art of making tule boats had been lost for generations due to forced assimilation in missions and residential boarding schools
In the shallow bay waters along the shore at Silver Strand State Beach on Saturday, small stingrays flitted back and forth as children played nearby in the sand.
As natural a scene as Saturday’s tule boat launch was, it wasn’t too long ago that such an event would’ve seemed nearly impossible. Years of forced assimilation in the Spanish Catholic mission system and American residential boarding schools for Indigenous children nearly wiped out the traditional Kumeyaay knowledge needed to make crafts like these.
Fortunately, groups of Kumeyaay living in Baja California retained the tule boat-building tradition, so Rodriguez was able to learn from them to share it with community members in San Diego County. Once harvested, the buoyant tule reeds are wrapped around willow branches, which give each bundle rigidity, and then tied off with thin twine to hold them together. Some, like members of a local Boy Scout troop, wanted to learn more about Kumeyaay traditions.
Although the Kumeyaay traditionally traveled in tule boats down rivers to the ocean to fish and hunt whales, Beasley said she and her family didn’t spend much time in the water.
