Surge in Covid-19 cases is driving hospitalizations in New York and other cold-weather states
Covid-19 cases are climbing and filling hospitals after the Thanksgiving holiday in places like upstate New York, New England and the Midwest, largely fueled by the still-dominant Delta variant.
While holidays trigger artificial drops in state Covid-19 data reporting—followed by some catch-up that can boost numbers—the latest data indicate the national climb in cases that began in late October is still under way. The seven-day average for new cases topped 116,000 on Friday, according to Johns Hopkins University. Cases had dropped below 12,000 a day in June, before the Delta wave took off and then briefly slowed this fall.
