Two weeks after winning the LPGA's Palos Verdes Championship, Wayne native Marina Alex is representing her home state in the LPGA Founders Cup at the Upper Montclair Country Club in Clifton.
If she can play Friday, Marina — who won thein California earlier this month — will have to scramble to make the cut. Marina did not give interviews after her round.
Among her local supporters were Chris Simon and Martin DeFranco, both former North Jersey CC employees, who watched her grow up on the course. They walked all 18 holes on Thursday and reminisced about the early days. “When she would go on the range, and especially when we played, she would outdrive me — all of us — it was great. ... Just to see her swing, we knew she was going places, without a doubt.”
“It is thrilling for us,” Marissa said. “She played every course in New Jersey as a little kid up through high school, and then to have an LPGA event here in our backyard is really thrilling. It is. It is pretty incredible.”
