Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) — If you're calling for a tow truck these days in the city of Rochester, it’s going to cost you more.

Gas prices are displayed on a pump at Kwik Fill on Stonewood Avenue in Rochester, Monday, March 9, 2026. Rochester, N.Y. — If you're calling for a tow truck these days in the city of Rochester, it’s going to cost you more.

" used to paying $50, $60 and here they are now, paying $120 on up," said Glen Sutton, owner of Glen & Sons Towing. "And a lot of people don't have it. It's hurting everybody." Sutton said six of his seven tow trucks rely on diesel fuel. According to AAA, the price of diesel averaged about $4.68 per gallon on Monday across the Rochester region. The current U.S. conflict with Iran has put a chokehold on the key shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz. As a result, oil per barrel since the start of the war has reached over $100. Sutton said when the price of energy goes up, so does everything else. "With the prices of gas, your payroll, your insurance, your maintenance on the truck, it's like, it's hard to keep going," said Sutton.Shortly after I interviewed Christine Murray at Kwik Fill on Stonewood Avenue, the price of diesel went up 20 cents per gallon, from $4.69 to $4.89. "Oh, jumping up like crazy," Murray said. "I mean, within, I would say, a week, it's gone up 60, 80 cents more." With key oil shipping lanes like the Straight of Hormuz at a standstill, Murray said there's no relief in sight. She's dreaming of the good old days of just about two weeks ago. "We didn't even have it at the $2.70 for that long," she said. "I feel like we got a little taste of something. It was kind of like, there you go, rip it out from underneath us." Murray said she feels prices will head back down once oil gets moving again. One customer who voted for President Donald Trump said he's liking most of the administration's policies — except the conflict with Iran. "Why can't we worry about America? America first?" he asked. "That is exactly what he ran his campaign on, and it like he's starting to get away from that.""Everybody's saying 'Wish this would end,'" she said. "Don't understand why it's affecting us this way."Police are investigating a overnight crash at a Greece gas station that killed a driver.Rochester, N.Y.
