Defenders of conservatorships say they can protect people from harming themselves or being exploited by others. Still, the arrangements can result in secret abuse of the elderly, disabled and other vulnerable people. They can also lead to financial abuse.
The #FreeBritney movement that just helped Britney Spears score a major court victory over her contested conservatorship has set its sights on a new target: similar arrangements that may be trapping people who aren’t pop stars.
On Wednesday, a judge in L.A. County Superior Court suspended James Spears, the 39-year-old pop singer’s father, from the helm of a conservatorship that has controlled his daughter’s life and roughly $60 million estate for the last 13 years. The judge appointed a temporary conservator, opening a path to end the arrangement this fall.
