Amid widespread worries of COVID-19 spreading at polling places, the number of mail-in ballots is surging far faster than states' ability to count them.

Former Vice President Biden calls out President Trump on his handling of the coronavirus, race relations and the economy as a recent ABC News/IPSOS poll shows Trump’s approval slipping.New York's polls closed nearly three ago. But many candidates still don't know whether they've won -- because New York City is still counting ballots that arrived in the mail.

Box of absentee ballots waiting to be counted at the Albany County Board of Elections, June 30, 2020, in Albany, N.Y.Professor Charles Stewart III, director of the MIT Election Data & Science Lab, said he's concerned the confusion could last for"a couple weeks, maybe longer."'They've never had to run an election like this'

Voters wait in line to receive provisional ballots at a polling site in Hackensack, N.J., July 7, 2020.In 2016, a quarter of ballots cast in the general were absentee or mail-in ballots. A women is helped by an election worker to put her ballot in a box while voting from her car in the parking lot of Lavell Edwards Stadium on the campus of Brigham Young University, June 30, 2020, in Provo, Utah. "The thing i'm very nervous about is the signature-match rule," Kubic said, in which the signature on an absentee envelope is compared with the signature made by a voter when registering."We're talking about signatures that might have been put on a registration form 30 years ago. Taking a one-hour handwriting seminar at the Holiday Inn by the airport does not make you a handwriting expert.

"There's an election administrator's prayer -- that the election is not close," said Professor Michael McDonald of the University of Florida."I think that's what we all need to pray for." Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden tours McGregor Industries with owner Robert McGregor on July 09, 2020 in Dunmore, Pa. The former vice president, who grew up in nearby Scranton, toured the metal works plant in northeastern Pennsylvania and spoke about his economic recovery plan.

Stewart said this raises other concerning prospects, including that traditionally"safe" states can't be immediately called on election night.
