Subscribers: As Arizona faces vet shortage, Legislature considers loan forgiveness for vet students
Arizona veterinary students could see up to $100,000 in student loan forgiveness amid a statewide shortage of veterinarians, a problem particularly affecting rural and ranching communities, humane societies and other nonprofit animal shelters.
The bill designates $5 million to the fund, which could forgive loans up to $100,000 for 50 veterinarians Proponents see the program as a much-needed response to veterinarian shortages across the state. Food animal veterinarians are few and far between, especially in rural counties. In Apache and Navajo, the report estimated only two or three food animal veterinarians. In Yuma, there are none.
The animal agriculture industry in Arizona was the largest agricultural sector in the state in a 2018 Arizona Department of Agriculture guide, and generates a large proportion of sales in the state's $23.3 billion agriculture industry. The Arizona Humane Society's Second Chance Animal Trauma hospital treats stray and abused animals, the spay and neuter clinic works to decrease stray animal populations and the Pet Resource Center provides affordable veterinary care to underserved communities.
Arizona previously only had a private veterinary school, Midwestern University, which accepted its first students in 2014.
