Ethan Huang, SCNG intern, did the “Barbenheimer” thing. Like with many young people, the story of Oppenheimer resonated in a polarized era.
I was among them – minus the cosplay – but was nevertheless enchanted by the turnout. And it was most surprising for “Oppenheimer.”
Being a member of the latter cohort spurred my curiosity: Was the film’s draw among younger audiences because of a mere social media sensation, or is there something deeper going on here, in which the film is finding a way to connect to contemporary audiences?Among them were those who are familiar with Nolan’s work, such as Graham Ros, a film and television production major at Chapman University, in Orange County.
Meanwhile, audiences sought spectacle. Although the film seemed to be a drama mostly consisting of board meetings, science jargon and court sequences, people wanted to see a glorious screen filled edge to edge, feel a theater shaking, with the cinematic might of an atomic weapon. The A-list cast also served to bring excitement to audiences, from Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr.
“Oppenheimer” makes the wartime American machine look ugly, both in its selfish interests during the war and efforts to silence Oppenheimer following it. One of the most effective, but subtle moments shows an official crossing Kyoto off of a list of potential bombing locations simply because it was he and his wife’s honeymoon location.
“The movie itself is a deconstruction of war and Americanism and patriotism, and that is a topic that’s in our culture all the time now,” he says. “I think the younger generation likes to explore what America does wrong so that we can do it right in the future.” An entire side of popular culture can be attributed to the invention of nuclear power, as the very subject is rooted in a genre of film, music and video games. Stanley Kubrick’s “Dr. Strangelove” remains one of the earliest, while post-apocalyptic stories like “Mad Max” attribute its end of the world landscape to nuclear warfare.
