Ipoh is heading towards becoming one of the more popular tourist destinations in the country.

Apart from the hills and a selection of signature dishes like chicken rice, curry mee and salted chicken, the city has also a number of creative residents who hope to draw more tourists through their artworks.

“What is happening in the art scene right now is the lack of public participation, which can be resolved by establishing platforms where artists and the creative community can promote their works at venues that provide reasonable pricing,” he said. “We urgently need a space where local artists, regardless of their form of art, can come and display their works.

“Growing up, I didn’t have a lot of toys to play with, so I spent most of my time playing with mud, shaping and moulding it into whatever came to my mind. That is how I got started in pottery,” she said, adding that she was recently in Japan to present her latest artworks.“I like to go to waterfalls and sketch there.

“Even without putting the studio on social media, I received calls and messages asking if I could organise a pottery class.Ng says space constraints is limiting her from allowing more people to join her pottery class. - Courtesy pix “With the talents that we have in Ipoh, I believe we can attract more tourists to come here not only for the tasty food but also for the art.

“Both the state government and the community should work together in educating and raising awareness about culture and art. “Tourists flock to Ipoh mainly for its local food. They don’t know that there are also many creative people in the art and crafts industry here.“I remember Ipoh Kreative Festival in 2016 and The Other Festival in 2015 and 2017. They were great festivals and I wonder why we don’t have similar festivals now,” said Sarah.
