When Eric Brunner, an artist in Philadelphia, was diagnosed with ALS at just 33 years old, he turned to art to spotlight the diverse faces of people living with ALS through 3-D printed images that he hopes will spark a conversation about the disease. WCAU's Matt DeLucia reports.
Philadelphia dad Eric Brunner fell into a depression after he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the fatal disease commonly known as ALS. “Doctors are like, ‘You have 2 to 5 years,’ and then they pretty much send you on your way,” Brunner, 37, tells TODAY.com. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease — and there is no cure.
“You feel this urgency to get things done while you still can,” Brunner says. Katie Silvestri, a nurse practioner in Massachusetts who is included in Brunner's art, was diagnosed at age 34, three months after her daughter was born. Silvestri says she got “chills” when she learned about Brunner’s project. “Seeing the diverse ages and genders really hits home. Young girls, older men, those who use a ventilator to breathe, those smiling, those staring.
