Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith revealed why the team and Justin Fields did not attack the middle of the field

Arthur Smith, Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator and the former Atlanta Falcons head coach, talks before an NFL football game between the Steelers and the Falcons on Sunday, Sept. 8, 2024, in Atlanta.

When the passing charts from Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons came out, it looked almost too familiar to what the Pittsburgh Steelers had done over the last three or four seasons. All of Justin Fields’ throws went to the sideline, with none targeting the middle of the field. The middle of the field is known as the most fertile area for explosive plays, so that raised a huge issue for the Steelers. Except offensive coordinator Arthur Smith designed itStar safeties Jessie Bates and Justin Simmons roamed the middle of the field to create issues for the Steelers, and Smith went into the game plan to make sure Bates could not take over the game. They did just that to take Bates out of it.

“Again, don’t let their best player wreck the game. We had a couple of other things for Jesse,” Smith said. “He even texted me, as I said. I don’t know why more people don’t hear him about him, but he’s arguably one of the top players in the league, and he wrecked week one. If you watch week one last year, he nearly won it by himself. Two picks almost got a third fumble, force fumble late and the way the game was going we were able to stay ahead and it allowed us to not try to let him effective.
