A splendid and often rewarding way to spend a summer day is to wander the sun-splashed streets and look at art. Two of the most venerable art fairs come in June, with the Old Town Art Fair this weekend.

I wandered through the South Side fair Sunday for a few hours, talking to a few artists and more than a few visitors. Generally, pleasant conversations took place, superlatives flowed about the lovely weather.

Then, in a bolt of inspiration, one of us thought we should have our own art in the “court.” There were about 25 of us, ages 4 to about 12, and we painted and drew furiously for a couple of weeks and were eventually able to fill the fence that ran the length of the court with art.
