Ms. Tatarin has been Almira’s art teacher for five years, and she enjoys watching students use art as an outlet to cope with the stressors in their lives.

Students use art as an outlet at Almira Elementary School on Cleveland's West Side.CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The word “artist” is spelled in all caps on Ms. Mariya Tatarin’s whiteboard at Almira Elementary School, with each letter written on a piece of paper.

and The Plain Dealer have spent more than a year embedded at Almira Elementary School for a special project called Cleveland’s Promise, documenting life inside a Cleveland classroom and the many challenges of educating children growing up in poverty. During the summers, Ms. Tatarin’s mom took her to an art club where she’d paint, crochet and make sculptures. She honed her skills in the club, and she came to the U.S. when she was 12.

One day in the middle of May, Carter strolls into the art room with the rest of his classmates. He ambles toward his seat.“Just tired,” Carter says. “And I’m not in a very good mood.” The students start their portrait, and Carter says he instead wants to draw a cartoon of himself. He’s a talented artist, and he’s primarily been focused on drawing cartoons – perhaps he feels he’s not ready to draw a more refined self-portrait.
