Reiss Nelson was handed a start for the Gunners after late winner last weekend, while there was a debut for January signing Jakub Kiwior in defence, with Gabriel Magalhaes dropping to the bench.
Sporting looked lively early on, but it was the gunners who broke the deadlock on 21 minutes when an un-marked William Saliba nodded home Fabio Vieria's corner. It was more of the same in the second half, with Mikel Arteta's charges close in the opening ten minutes through Gabriel Martinelli and a long range shot from Vieria that sailed just wide.
The Gunners back on level terms seven minutes later when Granit Xhaka's attempted pass to Martinelli deflected off Hidemasa Morita and wrong-footed Adan.
