BREAKING: Leah Williamson ruled out of World Cup with ruptured ACL
Arsenal and England captain Leah Williamson will miss this summer’s World Cup after suffering a ruptured ACL.
The 26-year-old defender limped out of the Gunners’ 1-0 defeat to Manchester United on Wednesday night, sparking concerns ahead of a huge summer for the Lionesses.Those fears have now been realised after scans revealed Williamson will require knee surgery. An Arsenal statement read: “We can confirm that Leah Williamson suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in our Barclays Women’s Super League match against Manchester United on Wednesday night.
“Leah was substituted in the first half of the game at Leigh Sports Village and underwent further assessment on Thursday to determine the extent of the injury.“Leah will now begin a period of rehabilitation and is set for an extended spell on the sidelines. She will undergo surgery in due course. “Everyone at Arsenal will be supporting Leah closely throughout the journey ahead and we would ask that her privacy is respected at this time.”Mead also suffered a long-term injury in NovemberThe Women’s Super League season finishes on May 27 and Arsenal are still in the title race.European champions England are among the favourites but this is their latest hammer blow after Arsenal star Beth Mead was all-but ruled out earlier this year.
