Mario Ferri, 35, described himself as a modern-day “Robin Hood” after sprinting on the pitch at the Uruguay v Portugal Group H clash in Qatar.

He was freed from detention at 3am local time. Mr Ferri claimed that the Fifa president personally stepped in and “resolved the situation”., he said: “The president of Fifa, Gianni Infantino, came personally to help me.

He added: “They were able to prevent the captains from doing it, the players, but they were not able to prevent the message of this Robin Hood.”Mr Ferri, who has invaded the pitch at previous tournaments and internationals, said he Mr Infantino had asked hm why he made a protest at theMr Infantino’s apparent intervention may come as a surprise to some afterextraordinary outburst on the eve of the World Cup, in which he declared he felt “gay” and “like a migrant worker”.

Mr Ferri told the radio station he had wanted to “send a message to the world” with his protest and revealed how he had climbed onto the roof of the Portugal bench to jump onto the pitch from there.
