Dean Hawkins is expected to become the new halfback for South Sydney, who appear to have lost patience with Lachlan Ilias after just two rounds.
Lachlan Ilias looks set to be dumped as South Sydney’s halfback after just two rounds.Ilias, 23, has worked hard to move out of the shadows left by popular predecessor Adam Reynolds, but has been in the spotlight for the past two seasons, and was the player under most pressure heading into this season.
After watching last Thursday’s horror show against the Broncos, including Ilias kicking the ball into the backside of a teammate, respected commentator Matty Johns suggested Souths might be better off moving recruit Jack Wighton into the halves with Cody Walker.Coach Jason Demetriou has continually backed Ilias, and last year declared he would become “the best halfback the club has had in a long time”.Hawkins is a Souths junior and impressed over the summer.
Souths meet bitter rivals the Sydney Roosters on Friday night. It will be Wighton’s first game in the club colours, as well as skipper Cam Murray’s 150th NRL appearance.Latrell Mitchell was back at training after coming under fire over the weekend for a foul-mouthed interview with Triple M. He will not be charged, but the NRL wants to remind Mitchell of the need to be a good role model to fans.
