Rescue operations are actively underway in Houston as parts of the city have been inundated by continued rainfall from what is now Tropical Depression Beta, which has sat along the Texas coastline since making landfall Monday night, and is expected to continue dumping flooding rains over the area for another day....
The National Hurricane Center said that “Significant flash and urban flooding is occurring” in the middle and upper parts of the Texas coast, where 5 to 10 more inches of rain is expected, with some isolated rainfall totals expected to reach up to 20 inches. All of the rescues so far have been because of drivers becoming stranded after driving onto flooded streets, thereported, mainly in the southern part of the city, where Keegans Bayou has overwhelmed its banks.
Beta made landfall as a weak tropical storm on Monday night, bringing maximum sustained winds of 45 mph. The winds have since weakened below tropical storm strength, but the storm still has a large amount of moisture, which is expected to slowly move northwest, bringing flooding risks to parts of the Deep South until the weekend.“We are going to be in this weather pattern for the next 24 hours,” Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said Tuesday. “So let me just say that people need to be very patient.”
