ARO's recycling revolution: Turning Johannesburg's waste woes into wins for the informal sector
Despite saving the City of Johannesburg millions in waste removal and recycling, waste pickers say they are treated more like a nuisance than productive members of society.
To change this perception, the recyclers formalised the sector under the African Reclaimers Organisation banner. Informal recyclers are men and women who collect recyclable materials such as plastics, cardboard and paper, metals and electronic waste.
