Frontline medical workers say items such as masks and goggles are running out.
Armed forces are being drafted in to help manage and distribute essential protective equipment to NHS staff battling theMedical workers on the frontline of the crisis have been struggling with a shortage of personal protective equipment due to the outbreak of Covid-19 and a related manufacturing slowdown, particularly in China. But hospital trusts have now been told the army is being brought in to support the supply chain.
Over the last few days, ‘millions more items’ of PPE have already been delivered to hospitals, ambulance trusts and care homes, NHS England said.to ‘protect the lives of the life-savers’ and resolve the ‘unacceptable’ shortages of protective wear.The letter, published in the Sunday Times, described how intensive care doctors and anaesthetists had been putting patients on ventilators ‘with masks that expired in 2015’.
