The Army has identified the third service member killed in the tragic collision between a Blackhawk helicopter and an American Airlines flight. Capt. Rebecca Lobach, 28, was a pilot aboard the Blackhawk when it crashed into the commercial plane on Wednesday night. The other two service members killed in the crash were previously identified. Lobach had served as an aviation officer in the Army since July 2019 and had accumulated more than 450 hours of flight time before the accident.
During her service, she received the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Army Service Ribbon. Additionally, Lobach served as a White House aide during the Biden administration. In a statement released by the Army, Lobach's family expressed their profound grief: “We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Rebecca. She was a bright star in all our lives,” the family said. “Rebecca was a warrior and would not hesitate to defend her country in battle.” The decision to release Lobach's name was made “at the request of and in coordination with the family” after the Army initially declined to identify the third pilot aboard the Blackhawk. On Wednesday night, the three soldiers embarked on a routine training exercise in a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter. Tragically, the helicopter collided with an American Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet, Flight 5342, at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The crash resulted in the deaths of all 64 passengers and crew aboard the commercial plane, as well as the three soldiers in the helicopter
