COLLEGE STATION — When the pools came out for the 7-on-7 state tournament, Arlington Seguin head coach Joe Gordon heard what people were saying about his team. ...

7-on-7 provides the state’s best an opportunity to flex their muscles on the biggest offseason stage. But for up-and-coming programs, it can be a confidence builder, which both Seguin and Coppell found out Saturday.Seguin lost just one game heading into the semifinals, which was against DeSoto in pool play. That DeSoto roster is stacked with returning state champions. Seguin, on the other hand, has only made the playoffs once since 2016 and hasn’t won a postseason game since 2008.

“We’ve been working all offseason just trying to be fundamentally more sound and trying to be a more complete team,” Gordon said. “I think we came out here and showed the state of Texas that we’re here, and we’re going to continue to get better, and we’re ready to play big-time ball.”. The wideout was among the area’s top 5A receivers with 894 yards and 10 touchdowns last season.

“It’s a huge confidence thing,” Coppell head coach Antonio Wiley said. “Your kids are fired up, and they’re loving it because the only people who believed they had a chance was them. Them, their coaches and their parents.”Rising junior quarterback Edward Griffin debuted this weekend. While he is still in a quarterback battle with rising senior Alex Holder, his performance this weekend could have helped secure his spot.

While the state learned something about both programs during their deep runs Saturday, the coaches walked away learning something too. “I love the fact that our kids come out there and compete,” Wiley said. “I love the fact that our young men took it personally when they didn’t win. That tells you you’re heading in the right direction.”
