Facing a raucous environment on the road, the Arlington Renegades seemed to have all the right responses against the D.C. Defenders as regulation wound down...
Arlington seemed to find its stride in the fourth quarter after running back De’Veon Smith pushed through the defense for a 1-yard rushing score to make it 26-15 with 12:49 left. As the Defenders looked to run the clock down, an interception from former Texas Tech linebacker Colin Schooler set Perez and the Renegades up to fight for the tie.
Another Smith rushing score was followed up by a 2-point conversion connection from Perez to Tyler Vaughns, cutting the deficit to three points with a little over a minute left in regulation. Perez kept the Renegades in it with a 25-yard completion to Sal Cannella, converting an onside fourth down attempt.
The D.C. Defenders have secured home field in the North Division Championship game with their 28-26 overtime victory over the Arlington Renegades. The North Division Championship will be played at Audi Field on Sunday, April 30 at 3 p.m. ET on ESPN.Perez went 31-for-41 through the air for 335 yards, a touchdown and an interception, while Cannella led the team with 92 yards receiving. Ta’amu and King combined for 264 passing yards and three touchdowns to lead the Defenders.
To secure a spot in the South Division championship game, the Renegades have to defeat the Houston Roughnecks on April 23 at Choctaw Stadium in Arlington, or hope for a San Antonio Brahmas loss against D.C. Houston currently leads the South Division, while Arlington is in second and San Antonio is in third.
