Arlington police said the officer will be placed on paid administrative leave while investigations into the shooting are conducted.

An Arlington police officer fatally shot an armed man in a traffic stop Thursday after he refused to drop his firearm, police say.

The officer was conducting traffic enforcement along Interstate 20 about 1:30 p.m. when he made a traffic stop near Green Oaks Boulevard for a vehicle that was “driving erratically across multiple westbound lanes,” Arlington police said in a news release.The car pulled over and the officer told the driver to turn off and exit the vehicle, but police said he did not comply.As the officer continued to tell the motorist to exit the car, police said, he noticed the motorist holding a firearm.

Police did not describe what led up to the officer shooting the driver. According to the department, investigators recovered the motorist’s firearm at the scene.Per the department’s procedure, police said, the homicide unit will lead a criminal investigation into the shooting, and the internal affairs unit will lead an administrative investigation to determine whether the officer followed department policies and procedures during the shooting.
