An Arlington police officer was killed in a Dallas crash while on his way to work Thursday morning, the department said.

Officer Darrin McMichael died at a hospital after the crash, which happened on Interstate 20, near Dowdy Ferry Road. The Dallas County Sheriff’s Department did not immediately respond to a message seeking information about what led to the crash.

McMichael was a member of the department’s motorcycle unit, an Arlington police spokesman said. He had been with the department for 24 years and part of the motorcycle unit for the past 13 after working as a patrol officer and a detective in the North Patrol District.“This is a devastating loss that will be felt for a long time,” Arlington police Chief Al Jones said in a written statement. “Please pray for his wife, who is also an APD employee, his family, his friends, and his APD family.
