The Arleta High School cheer team achieved a historic victory, winning the first-ever CIF State Championship in cheerleading since the sport was officially recognized in 2018. Their flawless two-minute-thirty-second routine, featuring jumps, stunts, and dances, earned them a score of 76.9. This victory marks a significant milestone for the team and for CIF cheerleading.

Arleta High School’s cheer team at the high school in Arleta on Thursday, Feb. 6, 2025. The team won the first-ever CIF State Championship in cheerleading since the sport was officially recognized. After a year of preparation and practice, the Arleta Cheer team placed first at the California Interscholastic Federation’s State Championship on Feb. 1 scoring 76.9 for its winning routine that included jumps, stunts and dances.

“I was really proud of us because we had worked really hard to get to that point,” said Ashly Penate, 17, who plays main base for the team. As the “main base” player, she stands on the ground on the left side of the stunt to help maintain the stability of the team members above her. “It was stressful because not everything is perfect,” she said.

To prepare for the competition, the team worked on their routine daily for two hours after school. But when fires broke out across Los Angeles in January, many of their practice days were pushed back or canceled. “We were trying to always do our best, so we always huddled up and talked,” Penate said. “We tried to calm our nerves and go and do our best.”
