While the 21 points Ohio State scored in that first game might seem alarming, that output is actually a bit misleading. The Buckeyes also won’t be facing a school that boasted a top-40 total defense in yards allowed a season ago. Instead, the Ohio State offense will draw the nation’s second-worst defense of a season ago. Arkansas State conceded over 500 total yards and 38.5 points per game in 2021, both numbers representing the worst averages in school history. In fact, the Red Wolves began last season by giving up an average of over 600 yards per game to their first five FBS opponents.
Dating back to 2018, Ohio State games have produced at least 61 points all 12 times after the team scored fewer than 30 points in its previous outing. Under head coach Ryan Day, the Buckeyes have failed to score at least 30 points on eight different occasions. In all eight of the following games, Ohio State recovered to post at least 40 points. They averaged 49.4 points per game in those eight contests and could have a shot to eclipse that mark here.
