Sim, a Torrey Pines High graduate who led the Toreros in homers this season, brings raw power and work ethic to new team, which chose him as a third baseman
Kevin Sim is one of those baseball players who impresses scouts as much by what they hear as what they see.
The Arizona Diamondbacks appreciated this fact more than anyone, using their fifth-round pick Monday in the 2023 MLB Draft to take Sim, who was selected as a third baseman. Sim played both corners in the infield for the Toreros as well as the outfield.“I’ve played corner infield, and third base is probably the spot I’m most comfortable with,” said Sim, who led USD this season with 13 home runs. “I’m excited to get started.
The opportunity at the MLB Combine, which was held last month in Arizona, enabled Sim to impress scouts and other team officials after missing the last month of the season with an eye injury.“The competitive nature I have,” Sim said. “I had a good meeting with the D-Backs at the Combine, getting to know them a little better. Overall, I’m sure excited and thankful for this opportunity. ...”
