As his illustrious Arizona career wraps up, All-American thrower Jordan Geist is focusing on details in seeking elusive titles in the shot put and hammer at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

All he’s done is win over his six years at Arizona in the shot put and hammer throw.

Geist’s next opportunity to show the work he’s put in comes Wednesday as he competes in the finals of his two events — shot put and hammer — at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Austin, Texas. Those events will be shown on ESPN+. First up is the hammer at 12:30 p.m. MST, followed by the shot put at 6:30 p.m. Geist has placed in the shot put at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, but he's never won it.

Mature approachGeist, who plans on competing professionally and training for the 2024 Olympics in Paris next summer, will talk to agents after the NCAAs. Earlier in the semester, he discussed what's next with his coaches and parents so that he could just do his thing and not be concerned with that while he is competing. One of the possible opportunities is staying in Tucson to continue training with his UA throws coach, Lucais MacKay, and working with the program.

Geist isn’t one for superstitions like eating only certain foods on meet day or tying one shoe before the other, but leading up to the NCAAs he has focused on specific things outside of the ring. In the weight room, he is focused on speed and not a lot of reps. It’s about conserving energy for the competition.

The award, which is given to the most outstanding NCAA track-and-field athlete , takes into consideration indoor and outdoor performances. The top three candidates will be announced at the end of June, with the award given out in December.
