Phoenix fire officials were called to the Arizona Jazz Festival on E. High Street around 4 p.m. Saturday for reports of heat-related illnesses among several people in the crowd. One woman was taken to the hospital from the event, officials said.
Fire officials said they were initially treating two people at the event when they were approached by"several others" to get their vitals checked. They were found to be in stable condition and refused transportation to the hospital for further treatment. Firefighters will remain at the event due to the high temperatures in case any other attendees need assistance.
This summer, Phoenix experienced the hottest three months since record-keeping began in 1895, including the hottest July and the second-hottest August. The daily average temperature of 97 F in June, July and August passed the previous record of 96.7 F set three years ago.this summer -- and 199 more deaths are still being investigated by the Maricopa County Department of Public Health.
