Pawlik said that was buttressed by a 1969 Supreme Court ruling that upheld the First Amendment right of students to wear black armbands at school as a silent protest against the war in Vietnam. Finally, she said, nothing changes for students who don't want to say the pledge — at least for those whose parents excuse them from that obligation.
