GOP anxieties about the politics of a near-total abortion ban have led to an unlikely alliance among Democrats, Republicans in swing districts and Trump allies.

PHOENIX — The Arizona House voted Wednesday to repeal a Civil War-era ban on nearly all abortions that is set to take effect as early as June 8. The measure now heads to the state Senate, which could grant final passage next week.on April 9, inciting a national uproar and political panic among Republicans who worry that the ban will hurt their chances of winning elections later this year, including the presidential contest.

Despite that high-level pressure, Republicans in the Arizona House blocked two previous attempts to vote to repeal the law. Last week state Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs would then need to sign it into law, which she has said she would do both publicly and in private conversations with key Republican lawmakers, according to people familiar with those discussions who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk about them. If that happens, then a current law banning abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy will prevail.

“I am disgusted today,” said state Rep. Rachel Jones . “Life is one of the tenets of our Republican platform. To see people go back on that value is egregious to me.”Supreme Court announced it. In the hours after the decision, several GOP state lawmakers issued statements condemning the 1864 law and urging their colleagues to repeal it; they included Rep. Matt Gress and Sens.

“If you’re so weak as a legislator that you would suddenly change your views on abortion because you’re worried about your reelection, that tells me you’re a politician and not a leader,” said Kristan Hawkins, the president of the national antiabortion group Students for Life, which has been lobbying Arizona Republicans.
