Arizona House Minority Leader Andrés Cano (D) announced that he will be stepping away from his seat to attend Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Cano has won his seat three times but will be dropping out before the halfway point of his third term.

Cano has won his seat three times but will be dropping out before the halfway point of his third term. He ran unopposed in 2022, as the top two vote-getters win both seats in his Arizona district, when he was also elected as the minority leader. Now, he will be paying anywhere between $50,000 to $72,000 in tuition to attend a school with a roughly 4% acceptance rate, according to the U.S. News and World Report for what Cano referred to as a"once in a lifetime opportunity.

Dear family: I've been accepted to the Harvard Kennedy School. Once the state budget is complete, I'll be stepping down from the legislature & the LGBTQ+ Alliance Fund to prepare for my next chapter in public service. Thank you for the opportunity to represent our shared values. pic.twitter.

"Here in our country and throughout the world, the Kennedy School has trained the leaders of today to think locally and act globally," Cano said in his announcement video."Put simply, I want to do more for the people of Arizona and our nation, and I want to be prepared."Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs vetoed the first budget that came out of the House, but is likely to pass a subsequent plan set to be released Monday. The budget's deadline is June 30.
