The Diamondbacks’ offense remained ice cold, getting three-hit in a loss to the New York Mets on Friday.
“We can’t get any momentum going,” Smith said. “We get guys on base and it seems like everybody wants to try to get the big hit and that makes it worse. We’ve just got to keep grinding, keep chugging away at each individual to try to get better. And try not to press as much.”
“This is a big stage for a young team,” manager Torey Lovullo said. “This is a very young team. They’re learning on the job. I expect tomorrow will be better than today. I expect the third day will be better than the second day. This is just a little bit of a grind for us. We’ve got to keep fighting.”
The offense was not solely to blame on Friday. The Diamondbacks allowed a seemingly catchable pop fly to drop in shallow center in the first, leading to a run. Two innings later, catcher Jose Herrera sailed a throw into center field on a stolen base attempt, setting the stage for another run.
