The Cardinals announced the move to cut the veteran receiver from their roster on social media Friday. Hopkins spent three seasons in Arizona.
The Arizona Cardinals released veteran wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins Friday, ending the five-time Pro Bowler's tenure with the team after three seasons., but continued to work out on his own while the team convened for offseason activities. In the end, it appeared the Cardinals could not find the level of compensation they sought for Hopkins in a trade and moved on from him.
Hopkins immediately becomes a free agent with his release, which allowed the Cardinals to clear more than $7 million in salary cap space this year because the release happened prior to June 1. He had two years remaining on his contract, which came from an extension he signed in September 2020. The Cardinals, per several reports, will still have to absorb around $22 million in dead money, but won't have to pay Hopkins in 2024.Hopkins, whom the Cardinals got in a lopsided trade with the Houston Texans three years ago that saw running back David Johnson and draft picks go to Houston, dominated at times on the field, becoming the primary target for quarterback Kyler Murray.
