Designed by Sofia Prantera, the blanket draws inspiration from her Italian heritage and celebrates multiculturalism. The campaign was supported by out-of-home and social advertising in London.
Cult streetwear brand Aries has teamed up with ProtonVPN to create a special blanket embedded with NFC technology that allows users to activate a one-month free service from ProtonVPN. The service provides access to content from 120 countries.
The technology is woven directly into the blanket’s woven tag, and a simple tap on it opens a URL that will give users access to the VPN service. Conceived by Uncommon Creative Studio, the concept for the blanket is based on research involving international students and expats.Proton VPN found that around 88% of expats experience reduced feelings of isolation while accessing content from home, while 82% of foreign students reported feeling homesick.“From the moment we first saw this concept, we knew it was something special – a brilliant way to bring Proton VPN into an entirely new space. Teaming up with Aries lets us bring together two seemingly opposite worlds, cutting‑edge security and everyday comfort,” said Morgane Leonardi, VPN expert at Proton.“The Proton VPN Blanket turns a simple, cozy moment into instant and unrestricted access to TV shows, movies, and sports that keep people feeling at home,” he continued.The visual directionThe blanket is designed by Sofia Prantera, an expat herself. Hailing from Italy, she took inspiration from her birth culture in a bid to be closer to it emotionally.“I wanted to design something that captures the feeling of connection — that mix of longing and warmth you get when you find reminders of where you’re from,” Prantera explained.“The design is patchworked like a quilt, filled with references and images that echo the sense of otherness you feel when moving abroad, but also celebrating the beauty of multiculturalism,” she added.A limited editionThe VPN blanket campaign was supported by out-of-home and social advertising that ran for six weeks across London when the clocks went back. The campaign targeted different diaspora communities with creative messages focused on the feeling of missing home.It included digital out-of-home ads aimed at international students in university halls, as well as high-impact outdoor sites in areas with large diaspora populations, including Indian, Latin American, American, Australian, French, Italian, and Polish communities.“A VPN blanket shouldn’t exist — which is exactly why we made it. With Proton VPN and Aries, we turned an invisible piece of tech into something you can touch, feel, and actually love. It’s comfort, culture, and connection wrapped into one unexpected idea,” said Julie Matheney, ECD at Uncommon Creative Studio.The VPN blanket is made in Italy with a blend of 80% wool and 20% polyamide, with a size of 126 cm x 140 cm. It is available on Aries’ official website for $260.A new shiftThe VPN blanket highlights a new approach by tech companies, treating digital tools not just as background services but as physical products with emotional value.As people increasingly live, work, and study across countries, brands that combine useful technology with a sense of belonging are likely to connect better with audiences.
