Ariana Grande's Role in 'Focker-in-Law' Sparks Pre-Release Backlash Amid Franchise's Legacy
Ariana Grande, Focker-In-Law, Meet The Parents

Ariana Grande's casting in the upcoming Meet the Parents sequel Focker-in-Law has ignited early controversy, despite her successful acting history and the franchise's long-standing popularity. The film, set for release in 2026, faces prejudged criticism on social media, echoing similar backlash before her acclaimed performance in Wicked.

Ariana Grande, now a global music icon, initially rose to fame as a teenage actress, starring in the Nickelodeon series Victorious from 2010 to 2013 and its spin-off Sam & Cat.

She transitioned into music with her debut album Yours Truly in 2013, followed by My Everything in 2014 and Dangerous Woman in 2016, eventually releasing seven studio albums with an eighth, Petal, scheduled for July 31. Despite her music dominance, Grande never fully left acting, taking roles in Scream Queens, Zoolander 2, and Don't Look Up, and recently starring in the blockbuster films Wicked (2024) and Wicked: For Good (2025).

Now she is set to join the Meet the Parents franchise in a new film, Focker-in-Law, playing the potential daughter-in-law to Ben Stiller's Greg Focker. The casting announcement has drawn pre-release backlash, with some arguing Grande does not belong in the franchise, echoing earlier criticism when she was cast as Glinda in Wicked, a role that earned her widespread praise after release.

Critics also point to personal grievances unrelated to her acting, and the broader trend of social media-driven preemptive film criticism, particularly on platforms like TikTok. However, Grande has a proven track record as an actress, beginning in her teens, and her performance in Wicked demonstrated her ability to excel in major film roles.

The Meet the Parents series, beginning with the 2000 original and continuing with Meet the Fockers (2004) and Little Fockers (2010), is a beloved comedic franchise spanning over 25 years, celebrated for the dynamic between Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro and its unique, often painfully funny humor. While any sequel risks being weaker than its predecessors, Focker-in-Law deserves an opportunity to succeed, especially given its star-studded cast and Grande's established acting credentials.

The film is directed by John Hamburg, with a screenplay by Hamburg, and produced by Ben Stiller, Jane Rosenthal, Jay Roach, John Lesher, and Nancy Tenenbaum, among others, with Robert De Niro also attached. It is scheduled for release on November 25, 2026, blending comedy and romance as it expands the iconic franchise
