Argentina's citizens have gone to the polls Sunday for party primaries that should indicate how the presidential election will go in October
Guests wait for the arrival of presidential candidate Alberto Fernandez during the primary elections, at a cultural centre in Buenos Aires, Argentina. August 11, 2019.
Centre-right, pro-business President Mauricio Macri is looking to earn a second mandate, while centre-left nominee Alberto Fernandez is aiming to restore a Peronist government to power. Around three-quarters of Argentina's 34 million eligible voters went to the polls, Interior Minister Rogelio Frigerio said."It would be very difficult to claw back a difference of five points due to polarization: there's no scope to claim votes," said political analyst Raul Aragon.
He was a surprise nominee for the Peronist movement as Kirchner – already president from 2007 to 2015 – was expected to run again.
