Clay Holmes's days as Yankees closer could be numbered
Yankees manager Aaron Boone could be asking free agent reliever Josh Hader to close games in 2024, not Clay Holmes. Via The Athletic:
Bowden predicts Hader, 29, could sign a contract for three years, $67 million, which would give him the second-largest contract for a reliever in MLB behind theahead of the 2023 season. Hader’s contract would have an average annual value of $22.3 million, the most of any relief pitcher. Hader has appeared in 314 games in that time span, tossing 341 innings with a 2.56 ERA, a full 1.28 runs lower than Holmes. Hader strikes out 15.3 batters per nine innings - that ranks second in MLB among relievers since 2018 - and 3.6 batters per nine, both significantly better than Holmes.
