I am the inventor of the sports bra, an entrepreneur with more than 30 years’ experience in both business and nonprofit sectors. I hold 10 patents and in 2022 was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. An author and artist, I am passionate about empowering and nourishing the creative spirit in everyone.
There has been a lot of change in the business world, right? Technology, the global economy, workplace formats, to list a few elements in an ever-shifting landscape of commerce. It has evolved with big shifts and changes, doesn’t everyone say so? But maybe not entirely.
Some things about operating a successful business do remain the same — constant, consistently more relevant than not. These are the eternal, underlying truthes that while capable of adapting to an evolving environment, nonetheless stay true in essence. I was reminded of this when I recently came across not one, but several recent articles touting a goal-setting technique I first learned back in the 1980s while in the throes of trying to manage my rapidly growing young business.
Reading once again this pithy advice got me wondering: amidst all this evolution of commerce, aside from S.M.A.R.T goal planning, what else has remained constant, true considerations for a successful business? How about these:for the presence of these elements to achieve success has not diminished. .
Really, these consistent elements apply to any enterprise — for profit, non-profit, personal or professional — whenever taking steps to achieve a goal. And personally, I rely on these, as well as a bit of wisdom shared with me by a long-time associate who was aware of my bad habit to procrastinate: “Just move it forward, Lisa. Don’t think or worry about the end, just move the project forward a bit every day.
