The disclosure that, of all the registered political parties that are contesting for the local government elections in November, only three parties have declared their funding – and their declared combined funding is a mere R30 million – has raised eyebrows.
In terms of the Political Party Funding Act, the IEC is required to publish all declarations made by political parties, which must disclose all donations of more than R100 000 to the electoral body.The report indicated that the DA declared individual funding of R15 983 751.48, while Herman Mashaba’s newly established party declared just over R3.3 million.
