Thus, when Ambassador Shambhu Kumaran invited me to attend the Embassy of India’s Ayurvedic session, I didn’t hesitate to say “yes.” I even encouraged my fellow diplomatic reporters to attend. “These are lifestyle diseases, brought about by living in urban areas and their diet,” Dr. Roy reasoned. “We have become accustomed to Western food, particularly fast food. Little by little, it seeps into our system, affecting our health.”

“Practitioners eat only twice a day,” Dr. de Guzman disclosed. For most Filipinos—except those who are dieting like intermittent fasting—that will be quite a stretch, since we are accustomed to dining four times a day: breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner. Dr. Roy feels that the Philippine government needs to institutionalize Ayurveda, so that Filipinos can have more access to its practices as well as prevent them from being lured into bogus practitioners, or just simply following tips from social media.

“In India, Ayurveda is organized, legalized and institutionalized,” shared Prof. Sanjeev Sharma who is the vice chancellor of National Institute for Ayurveda. Said university offers undergraduate, Masteral and Doctoral degrees for the practice. Anyone who graduates from a six-year Ayurveda medical course is considered a medical doctor, and can even perform surgery.
