Readers debate the pro-Palestinian protests taking place at Columbia University and other campuses across the country.
As an alumnus of Columbia College’s Class of 1960, I find the situation at the university today depressing and see it as further evidence of the polarization in our country.
Now, antisemitism is expressed overtly on campus, and Jewish students feel threatened to the point that a rabbi working at the schoolFree speech and peaceful demonstrations should be permitted and encouraged. But an atmosphere that risks tipping over into violence is unacceptable. It should be possible to be Jewish and support Israel without condoning all activities of that state or the beliefs of its leaders — much less holding students at an American university responsible for its actions.
It is wrong on the part of some protesters to attack Jewish students, many of whom also oppose the leadership of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. But shifting the story to antisemitism on campus ignores what the protests are about. It’s neither fair nor helpful to compare the Columbia protesters to the marchers wielding tiki torches at Charlottesville in 2017. Protests against Mr.
Like Mr. Rosen, I did not vote for Mr. Romney in 2008 or 2012 but hold the senator in high regard. I suspect there are many sons and daughters of Harvard who could take the reins of the university and help guide it through troubling times.
