San Antonio residents can expect a significant drop in temperatures next week as an arctic air mass moves into South Texas, bringing with it the possibility of freezing conditions and light precipitation. The cold snap could last through Wednesday with temperatures dipping into the mid-20s for Monday and Tuesday.

The new year began with frigid temperatures, gloomy skies, and a bit of rain in San Antonio, a reminder to keep jackets handy even when they're not needed most of the year. Temperatures have since returned to warmer, seasonal levels this week, but don't put away your outerwear just yet: Another arctic blast is expected to hit the Alamo City next week.

\A modified arctic air mass will push into South Texas on Saturday night, sending temperatures plummeting Sunday and into the early days of next week. How cold are we talking? Lows will likely be in the mid-20s for Monday, January 20, and Tuesday, January 21, with afternoon highs reaching the low-40s and upper-30s, respectively. The entire state is preparing for below-average temperatures. We could also see a slight chance of precipitation, though this forecast could change as we approach the weekend. The hard freeze could also extend into Wednesday, January 22, depending on if San Antonio has any lingering chances of precipitation from the days prior. At this point, it looks like any rain we get would be light. \As with freezing conditions, you'll want to protect your pipes, shield your plants, and bring your pets inside for the night. Make sure to layer up if you head out early for school or work to stay safe, and consider heading to community centers or libraries for some warmth during the day. These kinds of low temperatures aren't unusual for January in San Antonio, which has historically seen the calendar year begin with temperatures in the teens, or even single-digits on a few occasions. According to the National Weather Service, the coldest day in San Antonio's history was January 31, 1949, when the mercury reached zero degrees. San Antonio has previously hit 17 degrees on January 20 (1943) and January 21 (1985 and 1924), so we likely won't break any records. Still, the average low temperature for January is 41 degrees, so the Alamo City will be about 15 degrees colder than usual come next week. And the wind chill has the potential to make it feel like 17 degrees on Tuesday, the NWS says. Communities in the Hill Country will be even colder, with morning lows below 20 in places like Kerrville, Llano, and Rocksprings. Arctic air will return early next week with hard freezes forecast Sun Night-Wed. There is low confidence in precipitation occurring. As we saw with last week’s winter storm, use extreme caution when viewing winter precipitation scenarios from weather models and apps this far out. Temperatures will eventually warm back up after this cold snap, with the latter days of next week expected to bring lows in the mid-40s to low-50s, along with low rain chances. We might even be looking at 68-degree weather later this month to end January on a warm note
