Archaeologists in Freising, Bavaria, recently unearthed the skeletal remains of a medieval man, accompanied by a prosthetic hand. The evidence suggested that the person's fingers were amputated while they were alive, leaving only the thumb. During the examination, archaeologists found remnants of a gauze-like cloth inside the prosthetic hand, which likely served as padding for the amputated area, probably to provide comfort and support.“The index, middle, ring, and little fingers are individually formed from sheet metal and are immobile. The finger replicas lie parallel to each other, slightly curved.

While the exact cause of his injuries couldn't be determined, it is known that this period was marked by widespread conflicts in Central Europe.
