The men had made deals with federal prosecutors to admit Arbery's killing was racially motivated, in exchange for serving the first 30 years of their life sentences in federal prison instead of Georgia state prison. But Judge Lisa Wood rejected the deals on Monday amid heated protests from Arbery's family, who said the offers came without their consent and that federal prison would be cushy compared to the state pen.

The hate crimes trial for the two men and another man convicted of Arbery's murder, William"Roddie" Bryan, will begin on Monday.“I told them very, very adamantly that I wanted them to go to state prison and do their time,” Wanda Cooper-Jones, Arbery’s mother, said Monday.
