A coalition of Arab foreign ministers and leaders issued a joint statement on Saturday, formally rejecting President Donald Trump 's proposal to move Palestinians out of Gaza to nearby Arab countries. The statement, released after a meeting in Cairo, was a unified response to Trump 's suggestion that Jordan and Egypt should take in more Palestinian refugees from Gaza .
This proposal has been met with widespread condemnation from Palestinian groups and international organizations as forced displacement and ethnic cleansing. Trump's comments came in late January, shortly after his inauguration, and have reignited a long-standing debate about the future of Gaza. Previous Israeli officials have also proposed relocating millions of Palestinians from Gaza to Egypt's Sinai Peninsula and other Arab countries, a move that would strip Palestinians of their homeland, a cornerstone of their history, identity, and culture. The Arab League, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, the Palestinian Authority, and Egypt all participated in the Cairo meeting. The ministers emphasized their unwavering rejection of any proposal that would compromise Palestinians' unalienable rights, including their right to self-determination and their connection to their ancestral homeland. They stressed that such actions would threaten regional stability, risk expanding the conflict, and undermine prospects for peace and coexistence. The group did however, express a willingness to work with the Trump administration to achieve a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East based on the two-state solution. They also called for the international community to help plan and implement reconstruction efforts in Gaza, which has been devastated by years of conflict and a recent humanitarian crisis. The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, brokered by Qatar, has provided a temporary respite, but the long-term future of Gaza remains uncertain.
