The new FP300 runs on batteries and is Matter compatible.

Chinese smart home specialist Aqara has announced that it is rolling out its latest presence sensor globally. The Aqara Presence Multi-Sensor FP300, which was first shown off back in January at CES, is the company’s first battery-powered mmWave model, designed for anyone who wants precise occupancy sensing without needing a cable or power outlet nearby.

Unlike Aqara’s previous Presence Sensors, such as the FP1E and the FP2, that need to be connected with a wire to a plug socket, the FP300 runs entirely on batteries, and Aqara claims that you will get up to two years of life depending on how you tweak the settings of the sensors onboard. There are a few features missing from its wired stablemates, such as detailed room layouts and multi-person detection, and the level of sensing isn’t quite on par, but the obvious selling point is that it’s much easier to place it exactly where you want it, including in humid spaces like bathrooms. In the box you’ll get sticky pads, screws and magnets to make it simple to place it on whatever surface you want to. Aqara calls it a 5-in-1 device and that’s because it combines mmWave and PIR detection for accurate motion and still-presence sensing, plus sensors for light, temperature, and humidity, so it can also double up as an environmental monitor. In the Aqara app you’ll get cards for all of these data points and they’ll also be exposed to the likes of HomeKit and Home Assistant as well. You’re not tied into any specific ecosystem though as the FP300 is a Matter-over-Thread device, so you don’t actually need an Aqara hub to get it set up.However, for the full range of functionality you will want to pair it to an Aqara hub using Zigbee. You will still be able to get it singing and dancing with Matter on this mode too, as Aqara hubs can bridge Zigbee devices to Matter. The Aqara Presence Multi-Sensor FP300 is now available worldwide via Aqara’s website, official retailers, and Amazon stores. A launch discount is currently live on Amazon whereby, using codes FP300NA11 or FP300EU11 , you will get you 15% off of the usual price of $49.99 / £49.99.
