Aqara's new Doorbell Camera G400 offers a slimmer design, Power over Ethernet, and wide smart home compatibility at an affordable price. However, it has some compromises in design and features.
Aqara, renowned for its compatible doorbell cameras, introduces the Aqara Doorbell Camera G400 at an affordable price point. This hardwired-only model offers two power options: traditional low-voltage doorbell wiring or Power over Ethernet.
Its redesigned slimmer chassis and vertical camera sensor aim to address installation and viewing issues prevalent in the category. The G400 performs well in testing and user reports, but compromises exist. The G400 is slimmer than the G410 but still not the sleekest doorbell. It measures 141 x 53 x 32mm and includes a separate chime.
While it's weather-resistant (IP65) and operates in a wide temperature range (-20°C to 50°C), it may not fit perfectly on all door frames. The device is mostly plastic, with a combination of matte and glossy finishes. It features a camera lens at the top and an illuminated button at the bottom for night use. Power options include 8-24V AC/DC doorbell wiring or Power over Ethernet.
However, older 8V/1A transformers may not provide enough current. The package includes accessories for easy setup, but smart home QR codes are inconveniently placed on the back of the doorbell. The G400 supports major smart home ecosystems natively, including Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, and Aqara's own platform. It also supports local RTSP and ONVIF streaming for power users.
However, it lacks Matter certification at launch and the chime doesn't house a Zigbee hub or Thread Border Router, unlike the G410. Existing Aqara users without hubs may need to factor in a separate hub for broader device use
