On Monday, June 5, at its annual World Wide Developers Conference, Apple will unveil the next software generations for its devices, including Apple Watch.
This fall is when we expect to see Apple Watch Series 9, and it will run watchOS 10. It’s this which will be unveiled at WWDC and Gurman believes it’s the software which will account for most of the improvements on the smartwatch this year—although it’s a fool who underestimates what Apple has up its sleeve .
And remember, watchOS 10 will run on many current Apple Watch models as well. While the general-release software won’t be available until the fall, developer beta and public beta software will be coming much sooner. As soon as next week, perhaps, for developers.The newest revelation concerns the Watch’s apps and how they will be revamped. Gurman says, “Apple is revamping all of the core apps on the Apple Watch with new designs to take advantage of the larger displays on the Apple Watch Ultra and larger standard watches.”This is interesting, and answers an issue some users have had, who felt that although the Watch Ultra is the biggest smartwatch display Apple has made, many Watch faces haven’t really changed. Mind you, faces like the brilliant Wayfinder, designed exclusive to the Ultra, is hard to beat. Nonetheless, this is promising, offering a bigger range of faces which maximize the extra screen real estate. Will, I wonder, Apple take this opportunity to improve these faces for other users as well? Gurman had already predicted widgets for the Watch, but goes into more detail now, saying, “Apple is bringing widgets back to the Apple Watch and will make them a key part of the new operating system. The widgets will look similar to those on the iOS and iPadOS home screen and allow users to scroll through weather, stock tickers, upcoming calendar appointments and more.” This sounds like a splendid use of space and will make all Watch users, not just Ultra wearers, use their wearable in new ways. This is always good, and makes users feel their existing product just got better. This may mean we’ll relate to the hardware differently as a result. As Gurman explains, “Apple is changing some of the button behavior on the Apple Watch, including changing the Digital Crown to open the new widgets interface instead of the standard home screen app array.” These are big changes. There will doubtless be more secrets shared at WWDC. Please check back for more as we have it.
